A cutting-edge new radar, designed to equip Royal Air Force (RAF) pilots with the capability to detect, identify, and neutralise enemy air defences, has flown for the first time.
This milestone involved the successful operation of the European Common Radar System Mark 2 (ECRS Mk2) prototype on a UK Typhoon test and evaluation aircraft at BAE Systems in Lancashire, with support from the radar's developer, Leonardo UK. The flight marks a key advancement in the ongoing development of the UK Typhoon fleet, enhancing its ability to control airspace. In addition to traditional radar functions like search and targeting, the ECRS Mk2 offers advanced electronic warfare capabilities, allowing Typhoons to locate and disrupt enemy radar with electronic jamming, all while remaining out of range of threats.
